Is Virtual Reality a gimmick or a genuine evolving mechanic?

Virtual reality has been rising as a potentially major force in the video game industry, but is it really here to stay or is it just another gimmick that will die out


What is virtual reality?

For some people reading this, they may ask what exactly is virtual reality. Virtual reality is a type of technology that utilizes virtual reality headsets or multi-projected environments, occasionally combined them with physical environments or props, in order to generate photo-realistic images, sounds and other sensations that replicates a user's presence in a virtual or imaginary space. In short, virtual reality is the use of headgear to replicate a convincing fictional environment


Why is there a concern that it is just a gimmick that will die out?

There are plenty of reasons to be weary that virtual reality is just another gaming gimmick that will die out in a few years


1. Playstation Eye and Playstation Move

Two of the most infamous examples of gimmicks that failed after a few years. The Playstation Eye and Move where heralded as the next generation of interactive entertainment, but both fizzled away after a few years.The Playstation Eye attempted to make a comeback through the release of Playstation Move in an attempt to replicate the success of Nintendo Wii. This tactic notoriously failed in a spectacular wayThis transitions into virtual reality as Sony has once again tried to revitalize the Playstation Move through using it as a controller for Playstation VR.
